Stained Glass or Sugar Candy Houses

This is one of the projects I did for Lazy Gal's Summer Class 2008.

This is the stained glass version.  Pretty isn't it?

But I think I'm going to stick with the original idea.

Question now is how do I quilt it?  I don't want to detract from the houses so perhaps stitch the ditch round the rooves and the house blocks and then fans on the black?

Anyone any ideas?

Depending on the size of the houses, I have quilted around the houses, doors and windows and then made shingles on the roofs. I usually meander the background or make clouds if it is blue. If the houses are small, I'd just outline the whole house.
The stained glass version looks great but maybe a lot of work!

The stained glass version looks awfully fiddly - great if you're a patient sort of quilter. I like the other version just as much though. I'm not much use with the quilting, I just haven't done enough to be useful to you, but Joyce's ideas sound about right to me.

love the stainglass look -- appropriate for some times and places I'm sure :-)

Sometimes, depending on the size of the houses, I've added quilting as detail -- like bricks or siding, shingles on the roof, a cloud and smoke from the chimney.. In the ditch works well for smaller blcoks I must admit...

I agree with quilt pixie - I'd quilt in the house details. Shakes or bricks on the houses, shingles on the roofs, bricks for the chimneys. I've done that one house quilts before, and it really looks great.

So cute - how about some stars quilted all over the background? Add a little sparkle with some shiny silver thread - regardless of what you do, its going to be a show stopper!

This is a beaut! Don't know how I missed it before. I like the idea of fans on the black - and outlining the houses. Have lots of stitching time planned for the weekend! Yippee!

Clare-

Commented on your two lovely house quilts in class! (But I'll say it again, they are great!) I'm glad I got to see your star quilt too! How cute. What a lucky niece!!! Have a great Friday!

I love this and have to do a house project for my patchwork club project to be finished by may, is it just tonya's wonky houses or is there a proper pattern somewhere ???

Lovely wonky houses!! Fans in the black will look great and some detailed quilting in the houses. Love it!

The stained glass houses are just the sun shining through from the backside of your funky house top isn't it?! You wicked woman! ;- )

I would think just outline quilting (stitching in the ditch) around the houses, maybe adding some details if you choose, would be fine. I like the idea of stars in the background too.

Your houses look great. Can't wait to see how you quilt them. How do you cross through your projects??? I haven't sorted that...so haven't posted my list of UFO's for Finn's challenge. But moving right along anyways.

I've had such fun reading through everyone's quilting suggestions! I love the stars in the background idea, and the quilting details on the houses.

The stained glass version is great, but I'd stick with the plainer version, too. Did you just lay all the strips on to see the effect?
